Smart, certified, educated and empathetic: that's the profile of every BootCampSF instructor. We're here to make sure you get a safe, challenging workout, not your own personal Private Benjamin. You might even enjoy yourself. (Yes, such a thing is possible at 6 AM. You might be surprised by what's possible with some fresh air, fun people and plenty of well-earned endorphins.)
Keith
Keith's first love is track and field. He won several collegiate conference championships in shot put and discus, including a 3rd place at an NCAA Division II National meet that earned him All-American status and set the shot put record at SFSU. Off the track, he's tried all avenues of fitness and athleticism: he's been through a significant weight loss (50 lbs), competed in adventure races and tackled 100-mile road bike rides. He can also empathize with injury recovery, having rehabilitated from multiple knee surgeries. With years of elite athletic training behind him, Keith knows how to motivate, educate and support you on the road to fitness.

Raul
Raul's training philosophy: "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish and he is nourished for life." In the world of fitness and exercise, Raul believes education is key; his own education includes working as an Army medic, a physical therapy assistant and an elite athletic trainer. Well-versed in sports medicine, he currently specializes in strength and conditioning, injury rehabilitation, sport performance, functional training and core stability. Not only will you train hard with Raul: you'll train correctly. On any given day you can find him practicing judo, playing baseball, running trails, cycling, rock climbing and kicking your butt in Golden Gate Park.

Gwen
Gwen didn’t start out a fitness queen—she had to run for it. In high school, she fell in love with distance running, especially through the woods, where she could connect with the world around her. But it wasn’t just the trees, it was the friends, too; in "circling up" for a stretch with her cross-country team, she experienced the bond that forms between people who face a physical challenge together. At college, she took the group concept indoors, training in and teaching 17 different exercise formats, from yoga to kickboxing. While she’ll always love a mic, a mirror and some bumping music (BootCamp Karaoke, anyone?), there’s nothing like jogging through the steam in Golden Gate Park with her new team by her side.

James
Lacrosse, crew, track & field, rugby, wakeboarding, snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, mountain biking, swimming, yoga…James’ love of athletics knows no limits, including geography. He started out a good ol’ New England boy, playing lacrosse and eventually earning himself a Bachelor’s in Sports Medicine from Massachusett’s Merrimack College. But when he fell for the adrenaline rush of extreme sports, the West beckoned. Jay (that’s what friends and bootcampers call him) moved to the Bay Area and hasn’t looked back. An AFAA certified personal trainer and Athletic Trainer for the UC Berkeley women’s rugby club, he knows how to help groups and individuals work purposefully and safely. And let’s face it, ladies (and assorted gents): who wouldn’t want to greet that smile in the morning?

Chris
Chris used to be a gym rat. You know, the guy who spends all his time “lifting” in weight room. The results were so impressive that other members started asking for advice, so he got his AFAA certification at age 19 and got to work as a personal trainer. That might have been the end of the story, had he not discovered Chinese martial arts and Tai Chi, and later, backpacking. The holistic nature of martial arts, and the satisfaction of being outdoors with a pack, completely changed Chris’s approach to physical fitness. Now a backpacking veteran and practitioner of Kenpo and Jujitsu, Chris can help you find the mental and physical reward of challenging yourself beyond the gym.

Meghan
Meghan
Early morning jogs through the trees singing military cadence calls. No, we’re not talking about Meghan’s typical bootcamp session. This is the way she and her dad used to bond when she was little. The girl’s been running ever since: track in high school, stress relief in college, Bay to Breakers, the SF Marathon, and now, as a coach for the non-profit Girls on the Run Bay Area. Her BootCamp sessions combine her love of hoofing it with her in-depth understanding of the human body. (Her other job, by the way, is teaching Medical Microbiology at UCSF.) Meet her in the Marina at 6AM, and you’ll find support, encouragement, individual attention and most importantly, fun.

Tracy
Tracy enjoyed a successful career as a web developer before leaving cubicle life to get some fresh air. Her obsession with the great outdoors has taken her up and down mountains as a biker, runner and hiker, and now she's sharing the love. With advanced education in outdoor exercise, first aid and CPR, her workouts are designed to help you reach your limits safely and injury-free, while remembering to enjoy the scenery. A six-year veteran of races like the Muddy Buddy, Angels Island and innumerable half-marathons, she knows how to set a goal and stick to it. She can help you do the same.Tracy also provides one-on-one personal training.

Nairn
Nairn was trained by the British military in physical fitness, where the boot camp approach was not about breaking down the individual, but rather, the science of physical performance. His coursework included exercise physiology, rehabilitation, first aid, cardiovascular endurance, strength training and group coordination. He also has a rock climbing certification from the Army Mountaineering Association and is currently training daily in jujitsu and boxing. Is he hardcore? Yes. Will his foxy Scottish accent make even push-ups sound more attractive? Yes. Nairn also provides one-on-one personal training in Marin County.

Ron
Ron got fit out of necessity—it’s one of the many requirements of being an officer in the US Army. (But never fear, real boot camp didn’t make him mean, just strong.) Since completing his term of service, Ron has established himself as a strength and conditioning specialist, helping people find their own muscle. He’s now a veteran personal trainer, with over ten years in the field and three credentials to his name. He truly believes that with physical fitness comes a wealth of benefits in all other aspects of your life. And with his BA in International Relations and Political Science from SFSU, you can talk politics over pushups.

Cat
Cat
Cat is the lovely voice on the other end of the line. She holds down the BCSF office, answering phone and email, processing payment and coordinating the schedules of our trainers. But she's not always stuck indoors; you just might share a workout with her sometime.
